Metro Central Ultrasound offers a range of ultrasound imaging procedures, including ultrasound of the liver. Your doctor may order a liver ultrasound if he or she suspects there may be abnormalities. Ultrasound is an excellent diagnostic tool that can be used to detect discolouration, masses, infection and other problems with your liver. The procedure is very quick and painless, making it an excellent tool for doctors in diagnosing liver issues such as cancer or cirrhosis of the liver and recommending the correct course of treatment.
If your liver ultrasound appointment is in the morning, avoid eating after 8:00 pm the night prior. If your ultrasound appointment is during the afternoon, avoid eating anything for the seven hours prior to the exam. Any medications you take regularly should not be discontinued.
A Metro Central Ultrasound technician will use a handheld probe (called a transducer) as well as a water-based gel across your abdomen to capture images of your liver. These images are created using high-frequency sound waves, which bounce back into the transducer and are translated into a visualization of your liver by a computer. A medical professional can then examine these images via a monitor in order to diagnose any abnormalities.
