A kidney ultrasound is a painless and safe diagnostic imaging procedure. Metro Central Ultrasound offers renal ultrasound and renal artery ultrasound exams to Toronto patients. A renal, or kidney ultrasound can create images of the kidneys, bladder and surrounding structures, as well as visualize the blood flow to your kidneys, which allows your doctor to make a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment if necessary.
One hour prior to your ultrasound appointment drink 1 litre of water, do not urinate. Any medication you take should not be discontinued.
The structure of the kidney and the surrounding tissue can be visualized using ultrasonic sound waves, allowing your doctor to see a clearer picture of this organ and the structures around it. One of Metro Central Ultrasound’s trained ultrasound technicians will use a transducer and special gel across your abdomen to transmit these sound waves into your body. When the waves bounce back into the transducer, a computer then translates them into an image of your kidneys and bladder. A Doppler ultrasound or renal artery ultrasound may also be part of your exam. This will offer insight into the flow of blood through the arteries that lead into the kidney.
