An echocardiogram is a simple, painless test that uses sound waves to create images of your heart. It helps doctors see how your heart is working, including the size of its chambers, the condition of the valves, and how blood flows through it.
Before the test, there aren’t usually strict rules about eating, but you may be asked to wear a hospital gown. You can continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise. It’s a good idea to arrive a little early to relax and fill out any necessary forms.
During the test, a clear gel will be put on your chest to help the sound waves travel better. A small device called a transducer will be placed on your chest, sending out sound waves that bounce off your heart. The returning waves are turned into images that the technician or doctor will look at to understand how well your heart is functioning. The whole process usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes and doesn’t hurt. It’s an important way for doctors to check on your heart health.
